Adult healthy-BMI range by height

These approximate values apply BMI 18.5 inclusive through 25 exclusive to each height. They describe a standard category interval, not a personal target.

How a calculator creates the range

The standard adult healthy-weight BMI category runs from 18.5 to less than 25. Rearranging BMI = weight ÷ height² gives weight = BMI × height². A calculator applies the lower and upper category boundaries to the same height. [1] [2]

For 1.75 m, height squared is 3.0625. The exact interval runs from 56.65625 kg inclusive to 76.5625 kg exclusive—approximately 56.7 kg to less than 76.6 kg. That is the weight interval corresponding to the adult healthy-BMI category at this height.

Why this is a reference, not an ideal weight

The calculation knows only height and a pair of BMI thresholds. It does not know body composition, medical history, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, pregnancy status, medications, mobility, or what is realistic and safe for an individual. [3] [5]

That is why “the range associated with a standard BMI category” is more accurate than “what you should weigh.” A personal target, if one is useful at all, belongs in a conversation that can include the information the equation leaves out. [4]

Why two calculators may show slightly different limits

The upper boundary is the weight corresponding to BMI 25, but BMI 25 itself is excluded from the healthy-weight category. Calculate that boundary at full precision and label it “less than” rather than substituting 24.9; round only the displayed weight. [1]

These small differences are a display issue, not competing medical standards. Keep full precision during the calculation and label the final weight values as approximate.

What about a muscular build?

A height-based BMI weight interval cannot separate muscle, fat, and bone. A muscular adult may sit above the interval despite relatively low body fat. The result is still mathematically correct; the interpretation is incomplete. [2]

Other body-composition or clinical measures can add useful context. Do not force a weight into a generic range solely to make a screening number change. [5]

Use Massy’s range as context

Massy calculates a height-specific range next to the BMI result and explicitly labels it an approximate reference, not a personal target. Metric, US, and stones-and-pounds inputs all lead to the same underlying interval.

If the number raises a concern, especially if BMI may not suit your circumstances, use it as a prompt for professional guidance rather than a self-prescribed goal.
